Our drive into Sedona was like no other. It is just so beautiful! I just had to take some pictures from the truck, so you could see for yourself. Not only is it beautiful with all the color in the mountains, but even the roads are clean and neat looking. The buildings in town all seem to conform with the colors in the town. What I mean is, they blend in very well. I don't remember seeing any white houses, as the colors of the businesses and houses all seemed to complement the surroundings. Mostly, we just enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We took a lot of pictures and we hope you will enjoy them.

Al and I set out on a day trip from Monument Valley, UT. We decided we would go to some places recommended by Goulding's Campground in our brochure. The first place we stopped at was called Mexican Hat. It is a small community in Utah overlooking the San Juan River. It is named for the Mexican Hat Rock formation.

Mexican Hat Rock Formation
It was hard to miss this as we drove out of town. There was a pull-off and
we took lots of pictures. They all came out pretty much the same though.

Our next stop was the Goosenecks State Park in Utah- known for it's impressive sandstone formations.

Our next place we stopped is called Valley of the Gods. I must say it was an amazing drive through this place. It actually took us 2 1/2 hours to go through. We went in from one road and came out on another. The road is impassable during the rainy season and it is sorta like an off road experience. Of course, Al loved driving it. It is so beautiful, that I just know if we are ever in that area again, we will definitely return. I hope you enjoy the next several pictures we took. Some of the pictures with the light on the sandstones are just beautiful.
Our next stop is called Moki Dugway. It is a narrow gravel switchback road that winds along a
steep cliff with a fantastic view. The road is only about 3 1/2 miles, but it was pretty scary to me, not to Al though. We climbed really high as you will see from the first picture of the road we traveled.

See the winding road below we had already traveled! Pretty scarey!
I had a hard time taking pictures as I didn't like looking down. Mostly Al took a few whenever there was a pull off and he was able to.
Just to give you an idea what the road was like. Mostly gravel and curvy!

Once we came out of Moki Dugway, we decide since it was just a short ride to our next stop, we would take a ride over to Muley Point. It was only about 4 miles, so we decided to make this our last stop of the day. Muley Point is a beautiful and breathtaking overlook. Pictures below are of the overlook. No words to describe are necessary.
Needless to say, it was a long day. We wanted to visit another place called Natural Bridges National Monument, but that will have to wait until the next time we are in the area as we ran out of time, And and we were leaving the next day. We had a great time and saw a lot and just couldn't believe all we had packed into one day. Whew, what a day. Everything was within a few miles of each other, so that is why we did it all in one day. We hope you enjoyed all the pictures.

What an experience! 3 1/2 hours long. We were with a Navajo tour guide, who told us stories and gave us the history of the area. He explained much of the culture and geography as well. It was a pretty rough ride through the area as much of the roads were not well kept. Many of the old westerns were filmed here. John Wayne films in particular, but others as well. Some of the films include: The Searchers, How the West was Won, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, Back to the Future III, and Thelma and Louise. You may recognize the backdrop.

We were lucky to get there just before their rates went up. A week later our rate would have almost doubled. We were only there for three nights. Everyone who works and lives there are Navajo as far as we could tell. All very nice people. In talking to one lady, she told me they would have to drive for over 2 1/2 hours in any direction to find a Walmart or any large department stores. They do have a grocery store on the property. Not huge, but adequate. The prices were a little high, but not too bad. You can buy almost anything you need. Also they have a very nice restaurant there. We went out to eat there one night and enjoyed their Navajo Taco's.

Well friends we have been busy! We have been on a roller coaster ride of fun to say the least. I'm calling our last 10 days or so beauty overload, because it has been almost too, too much! What a beautiful country we have. We have been so busy taking it all in that I haven't had time to update the blog, and now we are finally coming back to earth, so to speak.

Al has had a wish to visit a place called Monument Valley on the Utah/Arizona border, and we also wanted to go to the Grand Canyon. Both places seemed out of reach for the time of year we are traveling. Last year, we kept checking the weather, and knowing we needed to be home in April, we would see there was snow and very cold temps in these places. You just do not want to drive an RV in these weather conditions, especially up steep grades. Well, luckily the weather was so much more favorable this year. NO SNOW!! We kept watching the forecast, and it was always sunny and no precipitation predicted. Very high altitude in both places, so it was only in the 50's at Grand Canyon Village, but sunny and nice, as far as we were concerned. The Grand Canyon was right on the way to Monument Valley (that will be my next post).

We decided to take the train to the Grand Canyon. Since we noticed we were passing through the little town of Williams on the way to Monument Valley, we decided to stay at the RV park there, The Grand Canyon Railway RV Park. They also own a Hotel and the Grand Canyon Railway. We made reservations for our once in a lifetime first class round trip train ride to the Grand Canyon. It was a wonderful experience. The girl at the RV park told us when we went to pick up our tickets, if we mentioned that we saw their billboard on Interstate 40, they would give us a 20% discount off the ticket price. So, of course I did exactly that, and it worked. I am all for saving money!
It was a long day, but a very enjoyable day. We really enjoyed going there on the train. We had lovely refreshments on the train and very comfortable seating. We met some very nice people from New York State. In fact, they took our picture at the top of the blog. The entertainment was super. We have been to several National Parks and the Grand Canyon definitely ranks very high in our book. We loved it! As one lady said to me as she was walking by. "You cannot capture this with a camera. You must capture it in your heart." She is so right. We have a beautiful country. Al and I are so blessed to be able to see so many beautiful places, all different, and all so very beautiful. I can't wait to show you the pictures from the next couple of places we visited.Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04791979881054384630noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157621102351439631.post-973310515005053182014-03-01T14:49:00.000-05:002014-03-01T15:38:44.192-05:00Las Vegas, The Monorail, and the StratosphereWe are now in the Las Vegas area. we spent a week in an rv park in Las Vegas with all the amenities. Finally we had full hook-ups and I was able to wash clothes in my Splendide washer/dryer combo. I've decided no more Laundromats for me this year. After we left Yuma we went to Quartzsite for about a week. We had to wait for our mail and I must say, that was a nightmare story that I won't go into here. Our main reason for coming to Las Vegas was because they have a huge VA center here and Al had some medical issues (nothing serious) he wanted to have taken care of. We had already been to Las Vegas 3 years ago, and took in a show and the sights, so we thought we would do something a little different. Hubby wanted to go on the Monorail. It takes you from one part of the city to another with several stops along the way. We originally thought we would be getting on and off, so we decided to go to the very end and then work our way back. It was a fun experience. At the last stop we noticed we were fairly close to the Stratosphere. It was about a 10 minute walk, so we decided to go for it. We purchased tickets and took the elevator to the top 108th floor. Wow! What a view and pictures ...just don't do it justice. There were some bungee jumpers up there. They have to pay $100 to jump. We were asked if we would like to, but declined. We talked to a couple who recommended we have lunch at the Top of the World Restaurant on the floor just below us. The restaurant revolves around, so while you are eating you get a view of everything. and it is constantly moing. We ordered their special which was surf and turf (filet mignon and lobster tail) which included soup or salad and dessert. It was really delicious, but a bit pricey . It was a once in a lifetime extravagance! One day in Las Vegas was enough for us! We had a lot of fun but, we were tired. We walked back to the Monorail, and took it back to where our truck was parked! Like I said, we were tired!
On our last blog I wrote about Slab City, and one of our other stops was Salvation Mountain. I had heard a lot about this and had seen pictures, but being there in person was so different. I must say it was a most humbling experience. Leonard Knight created and designed this masterpiece. It is his work of love and his testimony of God's love that he wanted to share with everyone. People come from all over this country and even other countries to visit this place. It is located right next to Slab City. There are no utilities here either, and he lived here for 28 years working on this in the hot desert sun. A few years ago, Leonard moved to an assisted living facility due to multiple health issues. He was in his early 80's. I just learned also that sadly, Leonard passed away about 10 days ago. If you Google Salvation Mountain you can learn a great deal about Salvation Mountain and Leonard Knight. In fact there is even a movie in the works about him. In his years at Salvation Mountain, he testified about his faith to over 500,000 people who visited there. He was a very friendly person, and he was always willing to talk to anyone who would listen. People really loved him.
Perhaps you have read about Slab City in California or seen a documentary. It is a place that attracts snowbirds in the winter, but there are also about 150 permanent residents who live there all year. Many live in poverty and you can tell... they are just scraping by. Some moved here to learn how to live off the grid and to be left alone. These people are squatters, but the government basically lets them be. Most all our pictures were taken by Al from inside the vehicle. We were very surprised to see in some areas, really nice RVs with solar panels and some really nice set ups. We didn't bother to take pictures of them. I guess these were the snowbirds and they were in a separate area. Many years ago this place was a Marine base, but has long been abandoned by the government. I couldn't help but admire some of the talent of the people in decorating their surroundings.

Well, actually where we camp is in Winterhaven, California. Please don't tell Al, as he hates changing time zones. (kidding) We are just over the border from Yuma, and Winterhaven is the first little town, so most folks who are here are on Mountain time. We watch TV Channels set on Arizona time, and do most everything in Yuma anyway, so we find it much easier. All our clocks are set for Arizona time. Only our cell phones change when we are here. Last year Al and I went out for a steak dinner at one of the Casinos here in Winterhaven, and they were even using Mountain Time

We are boondocking on BLM land (Bureau of Land Management). This land is government land, and we are allowed to camp on it for free or for a small fee. The area we chose to be in charges a small fee of $40 for two weeks. Boondocking means we have no utilities and we rely on our solar panels for electricity and sometimes our generator. We have holding tanks for fresh water and holding tanks that hold our waste water. There is a place very close where we can dump our tanks and take on fresh water when needed. We have been here for almost 4 weeks and are actually enjoying it very much. We are basically in the desert, but not far at all from civilization. Many people who boondock like to go far away from people and go where no one is around. We like our space around us, but feel much safer if there are people around. There are actually a lot of other campers here, but all are at a distance away. We did have someone who was about 200 feet away the other day, and that was actually close. They only stayed for an overnight.
Our Campsite

It has been very warm here for the most part. The first week or two it was always in the 70's during the day and dropped down into the high 40's and 50's at night. Lately it has been in the 80's during the day and even as high as 60 at night. Can't really complain (and wouldn't dare complain to folks back home anyway) as there is always a nice breeze. Starting tomorrow, it is supposed to be in the 70's.

While boondocking, we can do pretty much everything we would normally do. We do try to conserve though. I can't do laundry with my Splendide washer/dryer combo though, and I do miss that. We went to the Laundry Mat a week or so ago and boy did I have a lot of laundry to do.

He used his ladder on the other end of clothesline. No trees or poles here!
It worked great and the clothes were dry in no time at all!

We go to town a lot as I'm not the best shopper. I always have something I need at the grocery store, plus we like to go out to lunch and sometimes dinner. Yes I do cook quite a bit also, and we do combine trips to town with other errands as it is about 10+miles. Since Yuma is the lettuce capital of the world or the U.S.A. anyway, there are lots of veggies growing here right now. I mean everywhere you go there are fields of lettuce, broccoli cabbage and every vegetable you can imagine.
Since here we have seen some beautiful sunsets and at least one sunrise (We don't usually tend to get up that early) Life is pretty good here. Boondocking is certainly not for everyone, but it suits us just fine. Now, mind you I am starting to think about a full service RV park where I can take longer showers and use my Spendide washer. We had some major truck problems, so we had to rent a car for over a week. We needed new fuel injectors. The truck was smoking quite a bit. It is a big job and we had to find a reputable diesel mechanic here in Yuma which is not always an easy task. Luckily, we did find someone and got it taken care of. Now we are happy.
I finally decided to start blogging again and I am playing catch-up!

Well, a couple days after Christmas, we left San Angelo and headed south and west for warmth. Our first stop was in Fort Stockton, TX, which really isn't too far away, but we never leave too early in the day, and it's a good stopping point for the first night. We decided since it was still really cold, to keep moving until we got to Arizona. So, the next morning we drove to Vado, New Mexico for one night. Both of these parks were Passport America parks and were right off the highway. Passport America parks are half price if you are a member. The next day we arrived in Benson Arizona, and there were several Passport America parks there to choose from. One in particular was recommended and though a little more expensive, it looked to be much nicer than the rest. So, we chose to stay at Valley Vista RV Resort at a very reasonable rate of only $15 per night. It was a very lovely place, and the people were very nice. Below is a picture of our site. I honestly think we had the nicest site in the place. We stayed for a week. I loved the Cactus garden in front. I'm not sure how it happened, but I did manage to get some thin needles from the cactus in my pants and right through to my leg. Just a small area. Duct tape works great in removing them from both the pants and my leg. Very fine needles and they can't be removed with tweezers (too tiny). They weren't painful, but I knew they were there. (ehow.com) We really like the little town of Benson, AZ. It has a lot to offer, just enough for us and is less than an hour away from Tucson. We spent the week getting caught up on housework and laundry and of course, Al had some busy stuff he wanted to get done. You know, man stuff!!

Someone in the office told us we should visit the Gammon's Gulch Movie Set. Not too much is advertised about it, but we did read something about it in a flyer. No brochures in the rack or anything else, just a small little something I happened to read that was hardly noticeable. This place was not easy to find either. Forget about the GPS. I guess if I had looked at their website, which I didn't know about til after, it would have told me. Yes, we got lost, but that was fun anyway! We found our way there many miles over dirt roads. It was quite a treat once we got there. We were the only people there and we got a private tour by the owner and founder Jay Gammons. Since we had called before coming, he was there to great us. It is recommended you call ahead because if they are filming, you won't be able to go there that day. Jay is quite a character, and not only did he give us a private tour, he played the piano and sang and played a banjo. He told us stories of famous people he knew personally and showed us pictures of himself with John Wayne and others. His father worked for John Wayne for many years when he was a boy. He told us who he liked (Paul Newman) and who he couldn't stand (Michael Landon). Apparently, he knew these people personally . It was very interesting. Quite funny too. The guy was a hoot. I had asked before we came how much admission was and was told it was $7.00 each. Now, that is reasonable, I would say. Only thing was, he didn't want us to pay until we were satisfied with the tour. I finally figured out just maybe he was looking for tips as well. Only problem was, it didn't dawn on me until after we left. Usually, we are really good about tipping people. Oh well, sorry Jay. I guess that's why you had us put the money in a jar. Duh!!! We were also surprised when he told us he only charges $500 per day for use of his set for Movies. I think that is pretty cheap when you think about it. He actually spent over an hour with us, and maybe closer to two.
Al and Jay, why are they waving bye to me? Hmmm!

As you can see from the picture above, it had warmed up nicely. Not as warm as Yuma was to be and still cold at night, but a real nice improvement. We drove into Tombstone one day while we were here and had lunch at one of the restaurants. We had already toured the place a few years ago with our friends Carol and Al, so we didn't stay long. We also took a ride into Bisbee a really neat mining town. This is a really busy place. We got out and walked around a little and will definitely go back there next time. It was hard for Al walking on the street, because the sidewalks were very hilly and uneven. Until he gets his other knee replaced, he found it hard walking there. That new knee is gonna happen this spring/summer when we get home.

<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Al and I were thanking our dear Lord for watching over us one night as we slept. We woke up in the middle of the night to a popping noise and smoke coming from our little electric heater. We are so thankful we both woke up and unplugged it and immediately set the thing outside to let it cool down. Needless to say, we put it in the dumpster the next day. Letting our place air out a little too. Not too bad, but I could notice it after being outside and then coming back in.

We thought the Passport America rate was only good for one week, but they told us in the office we could stay longer at that rate. We were very tempted, but had a package (medicines) that were arriving in Yuma, and I needed one in particular, so we decided we had to leave. We felt bad, because the day we left, we found out some of our friends from the Montana group were getting together at a Steak place in Tucson the next night. We were invited, but were already en route to Yuma. Seems like we are always a day late. Hopefully, there will be another opportunity in the future. We loved Benson, so we will be back and definitely to the Valley Vista RV Resort.

Stay tuned! More later!

I am playing catch up here. So, this is my second post in 2 days and hopefully, tomorrow or Tuesday I will post another one.

Well, we all sure know about how cold it's been all over the Northeast this year. Well, it was very cold in Texas as well. At least for Texas that is!! Keep in mind that we were living in an RV and that is a lot different than being in a house. I know, I know what you are saying Wah, wah, poor Nita! ha ha ha! Well, I have to tell you my joints were aching, I was freezing. It got down into the 20's and this started in November, mind you! We had some rather nice days, but they were few and far between. At night I just couldn't seem to keep warm. I had a wicked cold during that time as well which didn't help matters. The roads were icy and mainly the bridges. They don't have the equipment here like they do back home to melt the ice, so it took about a week for things to get back to normal.

Even so, the cold continued and we were there for 6 weeks, and then our furnace stopped working. Poor Al, he is a do-it-your selfer and thank God for that! He had everything apart and spread out on the floor in our RV. Luckily he went to an RV place near here and they tested our circuit board and found out we needed a new one, so for about $150 bucks, (which included a veteran's discount) Al got it fixed. It was quite a process getting to this point. We had been attending a church here and the pastor and youth director stopped by while Al was in the middle of all this. They have a tradition of welcoming people by bringing them a coffee mug filled with candy kisses that says on it "you've been mugged" really cute, but Al thanked them and apologized for not inviting them in as there was a total mess going on. Our floor was covered with parts and tools all over the place and it was freezing cold in there as well. Plus he couldn't stop to visit anyway. My daughter-in-law's mom offered us a place to stay for the night as she has a "Bunk House" she rents out. We were so thankful for her generous offer, but luckily, Al got it up and running. Seems like every year, something like this happens. Unfortunately, it was just a little too cold to rely on alternative heat sources and since we were mostly relying on solar anyway, we really didn't want to use the electric heater we had with us.

So, that is my tale of woe. We all have them from time to time and we realize they are just part of life. It could be much worse. Now that we are basking in the 75 degree sunshine, what is there to complain about. We still have some problems, who doesn't. Life is good though!!! Really!!

Check back tomorrow or Tuesday for our trip going further west! I'm done with my wah wah story!!! Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04791979881054384630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157621102351439631.post-70729153881032751602014-01-25T13:30:00.001-05:002014-01-26T12:29:51.754-05:00Catching up Big Time!I know it's been a long time since I posted here. Mostly though, I have posted what's going on in our travels on facebook, and I have had some requests from family and friends to start blogging again. To be honest, I guess I got bit by the lazy bug. It can sometimes be a lot of work keeping up a blog, and you always wonder if anyone even reads it. On facebook, you get lots of replies almost instantly. Of course, many people aren't on there, so they don't see what's going on. Also, the blog gives me something to look back on later. I actually enjoy going back and looking at previous posts of where we have been in previous years and places we have visited. It gives me a diary of sorts. So this will be a rather long one, and then every few days I will be posting some things we've been up to lately complete with pictures.

We started out on our journey around the first of November. We were anxious to leave to escape the cold weather and of course, our ultimate destination was to be in Texas by Thanksgiving and preferably a week before that. I had in mind to stop in Crossville, TN to see some dear friends I hadn't seen in many, many years, Joan and Larry Shaw. I hope my cousins in Virginia will forgive me for not stopping there this time, but it just didn't work into our schedule. We stayed in a campground named Bean Pot Campground right near their home. I had not seen Joan and Larry in at least 30 years and Joan is one of my best friends. I had been out of touch with her for a very long time. I must say when we finally got together, the years we had been apart just seemed to disappear. They had never met my husband Al, and they instantly hit it off with him. It was a wonderful reunion, and I can't wait until we can see each other again sometime. Of course, we have been planning this for a few years now, but you know how it is. Unfortunately, Larry is in poor health, but he has a very good spirit and that twinkle in his eye and smile is always present. Both have a deep faith in God and I know it carries them through the difficult times. After a few days, we moved on. I felt sad leaving to be honest and I would have enjoyed staying longer. I know we will be back.

We stayed at the Gulf Islands National Seashore for about a week in Ocean City, MS. It was nice to have a week to just rest and relax. We were basically just meandering our way toward San Angelo, TX to Doug and Deja's to see the grandkids. Oh, did I say that! I mean to see everyone! LOL!!! Ha ha!
Finally on November 20th we arrived at the kid's in San Angelo and it was so wonderful seeing everyone there. We parked in their driveway and were just steps from their front door. It was easy access to their house and our little house as well. Of course, the kids were in and out, and the first few days, especially the youngest 4 were all in there at once. It got a little loud and crowed, but oh what fun it was!!! Al and I are so blessed to have 15 wonderful grandchildren and even though these 6 are in TX, we are so lucky we got to spend 6 weeks with them right here where they live.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve with the family, and Deja's parents and some of her family members were here also. It was so good seeing everyone. We always have a good time, and as usual, we were well fed, that is for sure. We also had Christmas morning with the kids, and boy did they get a slew of things! I guess it pays to have a lot of grandparents, LOL! All kidding aside, these kids are grateful for even their smallest gifts. We had gotten them a suspend game as one of their gifts, and they put away their computer games and played with it for hours.

Before we leave and move on down the road, I want to tell you a funny little story about the youngest little guy. His name is Egan. Egan is only 2, and he thinks he rules the roost sometimes. The cutest little guy, I must say!. He will put on a costume, especially Batman, mask and all and assume the roll. He doesn't even mind wearing that mask, which I find rather hilarious for his age. Well, since he is so young, he of course needs to be watched while outside, and he had been asking to come over to our RV for a visit, and no one would bring him. His brother was watching him (they do have a fenced in yard). However, he took his eyes off of him just long enough. Well anyway there was a knock on our door. I went to the door, and who should appear but BATMAN! What you can't see is his cape. He walked in proud as could be!!!
Al had a place in mind he has wanted to visit ever since he first heard about it. It was kind of a "bucket list" type of thing. It is called Cadillac Ranch. He had seen it on Google Earth. and some of our friends had gone there. It's just a piece of property where 10 Cadillac's are buried half in the ground. A piece of art work, I guess. They were buried in the 70's and have been a tourist attraction ever since. You can see them as you drive along the highway. Several people go there every day. Al says they all used to be a light blue color. In recent years though, people have been spray painting graffiti on them. Unfortunately people leave litter and even their spray cans behind, as there is no one is around to monitor the place.

On our way in, we passed a man and I asked him if it was worth the stop. He said, "No, not really, I drove 120 miles just to see it., I had to do it." Well, that about sums up the place. It really was kind of a hoot and did give us a chuckle. Hope you enjoy the pictures from different viewpoints. No captions necessary.
We arrived at Doug and Deja's last week and have been enjoying the grand kids immensely, and we had a wonderful Thanksgiving with them. I keep meaning to update and show you our last couple of stops before arriving here. I will put up some pics of the kids soon. I know I am behind on things, but I wanted to share with you the last couple of places we stopped before coming here. I decided it would be nice to visit Oklahoma City again since I lived there 40+ years ago and haven't been back since. Since my oldest son was born there, it did have a great deal of significance to me.

We visited the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum there. I knew it was a place that Al would enjoy visiting. We were there for a few hours and really enjoyed all the exhibits. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take photos of much of it and where we were allowed, we couldn't use a flash, so the pictures didn't come out well at all.

From beautiful art work, western TV stars, such as Hopilong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger and John Wayne etc., all kinds of firearms, as well as Native American objects, and tons of historical artifacts that depicted western life back then.
I highly recommend a stop here if you are ever in the area. Not only is it educational, but very entertaining as well.
Another place we decided to visit was the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. We all remember the horrible act of terrorism that happened here on April 19, 1995. A memorial was set up here to remember those who were killed, and also those who survived, but whose lives were changed forever. At this time in history, it was the costliest act of terrorism that had occurred on American soil. One hundred sixty-eight people were killed which included 19 children. Over 700 people were injured.

We only visited the outside memorial, but there is also a museum you can visit. Unfortunately, it was getting late in the day, so we didn't have time to visit it. The outdoor Memorial was so nice and serene, a wonderful tribute to all those who perished on that day.
We are staying here at the Riverside RV Park in N. Little Rock. This park is owned and run by the city. It has only been here for 4 years. It is a really nice park, although it would be better if it had grass, but it is more like a huge parking lot. It is full hook up and the price was only $10.50 with our Passport America discount, so for the convience and our purposes we are very happy here.

The park we are staying at is located right on the Arkansas River, so the scenery is really nice. There is a walking bridge you can access from the RV park that takes you over to the Clinton Presidential Library. I took a walk over there today. It is 1/4 mile each way. After I got there I found out there was a $7 admission and I didn't bring any money. It was too nice a day to be inside anywhere so, after taking a few pictures I walked back.

Yesterday we took a ride on the trolley. It runs from North Little Rock to downtown Little Rock. It makes several stops and you can get off and on all you want. We just wanted to get an overview of the city, so we only got off for lunch. It was fun riding it and the driver pointed out all the attractions and of course, all the good places to stop for lunch.

Tomorrow we are headed for Oklahoma City. We enjoyed our brief stay here and will definately come back for another visit. Hope you enjoy the pictures.
So far, it has been cold everywhere, but it does seem to get a little warmer with every place we stop. The first night we drove out past Buffalo and spent the night in a WalMart parking lot. Not my favorite, but there were no RV parks open anywhere. Luckily, there were other campers there, so we felt quite safe and we both slept well. The next night we stopped in at an RV park near Cincinatti, OH. There were almost no RV parks open in Ohio either, but luckily we found an RV park run by Hamilton County. We stayed there for 2 nights. Our next stop was Franklin, KY and tonight we are staying at an RV park in a town about 50 miles west of Nashville.

I wasn't planning on updating my blog until we visit some interesting places. Right now we are just trying to get away from the cold. To be honest, I'm hoping for a low-key type of trip. Other than spending the holidays with family in Texas, we are not making any real plans. We are trying to take each day as they come. We do have places in mind we wish to go, and are making short term plans as we go along. It seems kinda nice to not have commitments after the events of the past year. I must say though, I am feeling well, and I am determined that this is going to be a great year health-wise. All of my tests came back normal and I am in remission.

Of course, we do have family members in NYC, NJ and Long Island who are experiencing some really difficult times right now. They are just starting to get things back to normal and are now facing a Noreaster coming their way. Not only were they without power, but some have had to wait hours in line for gas. We are praying all goes well for them.

Stay tuned. Will update again soon. I promise to make my next post a little more interesting.

Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04791979881054384630noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157621102351439631.post-31943749941937027232012-05-01T16:36:00.000-04:002012-05-01T16:36:54.756-04:00Chemo Treatment is Finished at LastIt has been a long time since I last posted here. I am finally finished with my chemo and will soon start my radiation treatment. They will last 6 1/2 weeks and I will go every weekday. Today I went for the simulation, where they get you set up for the treatment. I will start treatment next Wednesday.

My last few rounds of chemo were a little more difficult for me. I found myself being very tired much of the time and I have been suffering from migraines as well. It was finally determined that the Neulasta shot I receive after each round of chemo, was probably the cause of the migraines. Unfortunately, this shot is very necessary as it helps to keep my counts up and prevents me from catching dangerous infections. After each round of chemo, my counts usually went down low on the 7th day, but by the 10th day were back to normal. During those few days (always over a weekend), I had to be on antibiotics and be very careful not the expose myself to germs.

I feel great that this is now all behind me. After going through chemo, radiation treatment will be a breeze, or so I am told. I was told I will be in and out of there in 15 minutes each day.

I probably won't be blogging on this subject again, but if anything new develops, I will send out an email to everyone. I'm expecting the rest of my treatment to be uneventful which if fine with me. Thank you again for all your support throughout my illness. It means so much to both Al and me. Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04791979881054384630noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157621102351439631.post-30142714709900651172012-02-24T19:40:00.000-05:002012-02-24T19:40:18.010-05:00At the Half-Way Point-Little SetbackI had my third chemo treatment 8 days ago. Knowing I have three more to go, and also knowing I can do this, was very satisfying. After having a chemo treatment my blood counts need to be checked seven days afterwards and ten days afterwards. This is when my white blood cells are most apt to go down, making me more susceptible to germs and infection. Up until now, my counts have been very good, so naturally I just assume this will continue for the duration. Yesterday, I found out my white blood cell count was quite low. The oncologist said I should be very careful to not put myself in a position where I may catch something. I also have to keep taking my temperature and if it elevates to 100.5 or above, I must call them immediately. Al mentioned to him how tired and weak I had been lately and he said this is a side effect of a low white blood cell count.

We were looking forward to a visit from Mike and Holly and their three boys on Saturday. Al feels it would be best to put it off until my counts are higher. So much is going around this time of year, and people don't always know when they are coming down with something. It may seem like we are being a little over cautious, but we feel hibernation might be the safest way to go right now. Hoping my counts will go up when I go back in on Monday.

I am so glad we are having a mild winter this year. Most of the time I only need to wear my fleece jacket when going out. It's amazing to me that 40+ degrees feels much warmer here in the Northeast than if we were in Texas or Arizona. That would be a very cold day there. When its 40 and the sun is shining, the air feels so good. Knowing spring is around the corner and our neighbors will be coming home from their winter homes will make things much more lively around here.

Please say a prayer for me for this latest bump in the road. I have no doubt my counts will go back up and I will be able to have my next chemo treatment in two weeks. I am so grateful for all your prayers and feel that God has blessed me with a wonderful family and friends who care. Things have been going fairly smoothly. Considering I'm on chemo, I think all in all, it's not as bad as I expected. I've had some bad days, but mostly good ones. I'm often tired, but since I don't have to go to work, I am able to take naps whenever I feel the need.

Thursday February 16th will be my next chemo treatment. Then I will be at the half-way mark as far as my chemo treatments. This past Thursday I went in for my counts to be checked. Everything was very good and my counts were high. I saw the PA this time and she said she was amazed at how well I am doing.

Sorry, I don't have more to report, but actually I guess that is a good thing. Thank you all for your comments on here, cards, emails, phone calls, & messages on FB. I really appreciate hearing from all of you. Also, thank you for your prayers on my behalf.

We were 95 % packed and almost ready to go. We were excited about our plans and looking forward to going to some areas we hadn't been before.

The day before our planned departure, I received a call from the Radiology place where I had gone to have my yearly mammogram. They found a dense area on the mammogram and I was asked to come back in for another mammogram and an ultrasound. So, on the day we were to leave, I had another appointment to see the radiologist. No big deal, I thought, these things happen, and I'm sure we will be on our way the next day. This was not to be. After looking at the area on the ultrasound, the radiologist said I need to see a breast surgeon for a biopsy. Still thinking our trip would only be delayed another week or 2, I was able to get an appointment with a surgeon the following week. Long story short, I had the biopsy and it came back positive for Invasive Breast Cancer. It appeared that it was caught early, and the hope is that it hadn't spread. The surgeon recommended a lumpectomy and told me that chances were good that it hadn't spread and that would mean 6 weeks of radiation.

A few weeks later, after numerous tests and procedures, I had the lumpectomy. After the surgery, we were under the impression that all went well, all the margins were clear and nothing had spread to the lymph node. I went back to the surgeon for followup. She told me the surgery went very well and the margins were clear. However, they did find that there was a very microscopic amount that spread to the sentinel lymph node. It was only 1mm. But, this may mean that I would need chemo as well. So her scheduler made appointments for me with a Medical Oncologist as well as a Radiation Oncologist.

My appointment with the Medical Oncologist went very well. He said he really wasn't concerned about the microscopic amount that went to the lymph node, but couldn't say until further testing if I needed chemo. A test was done that involved sending a piece of the tumor to a special lab in California. The test is called an Oncotype DX. This is usually done with early stage breast cancer. They test 21 genes in the tumor to determine the likelihood of a recurrence. It took a couple of weeks for the results to come in . Unfortunately, my test came back as intermediate to high risk and chemo was recommended.

It seems like a lot of time goes by between all the appointments and testing that has to be done. I have had a bone scan, cat scan, blood tests, and most recently my heart was tested to be sure there are no problems. Last Friday I had my port installed. We are now all set, and I finally started my chemo yesterday. I feel pretty good, so far, but realize I will have some not so great days. I will have 6 rounds of chemo, 3 weeks between each treatment (should take about 4 1/2 months) followed by 6 weeks of radiation. Of course, I am not happy about all this, but I really want to get this started, in order to get this over with and back to my normal life.

Al and I were disappointed that we are unable to travel this winter, but we are so thankful this was caught early and we know we will have many years ahead to travel. We are also thankful for all the support we have received from all our family and friends. Many prayers have been said and we are so encouraged that I will be completely cured. This is not the journey we have anticipated, but I must say, it is something we have always known might happen. None of us know when something like this will come into our lives. So, for now we take one day at a time, do what has to be done and pray that all will turn out ok.

I know this is not supposed to be what my blog is about and I am determined for it not to be! We are hoping to go away again next October and do all the wonderful things we had planned for this year. Many thanks to all our friends and family for your continued support and, most of all your prayers. We love all of you so much!
They were only a little over 30 miles away, so a day trip was definitely in order. Just when we thought we had seen it all, and nothing more could compare, we visited these two places, and we were unprepared for all we took in that day. Even on the way in to Dead Horse Point State Park, the beauty was such that I kept wondering when I was going to come to the booth to pay the entrance fee. It seemed to be several miles of such beauty that I couldn't believe we weren't already there. Then finally we saw the sign and then the booth. So, we stopped here first and spent a couple of hours before heading to Canyonlands National Park.
We had not planned to get home quite this early, but we were dodging some bad weather predictions in various areas. First, when we were in Colorado, snow was predicted, then while in Kansas, where we spent a few days, we learned there were some high winds and possible tornado warnings. We decided the best thing to do was keep heading north and east. So, as planned (although not quite as early as this) we headed to Goshen, Indiana. We felt like we were being chased from one state to another. Not good weather there either, but we stayed for 3 days and then decided we were already close enough to home and that it was the best place to head. Since few campgrounds were even opened yet between there and home, we couldn't wait to get home at that point. It was cold everywhere including here when we arrived. However, the warmth of a nice fire in our home makes everything seem so right. We love being home! We had a wonderful journey these past 6 months. I am in such awe of it all. I know I keep saying that, but honestly we feel so lucky and thankful to have seen so much of this beautiful country this past winter.

Given all the devastation in the Southern and Southeastern states from tornadoes, I am so glad we went the direction we did. It might be colder here right now than normal, but we expect it to warm up in the days ahead. Anyway, it's nice to be back home and have the warmth of our family around us.

Since we have been busy getting our home settled again, I haven't posted everything from our trip. We visited Canyonlands National Park as well as Dead Horse Point State Park while at Arches National Park. It was only about 30 some miles from Moab, so it was a must see. I will be doing another post very soon. More amazing photos, I promise!

Have a very happy Easter everyone! Check back soon! We spent a total of 5 days at "The Devil's Garden Campground" in Arches National Park. Like I said in my previous post, we had a great visit with Robbie and Alice and also went on a hike together. The trail was called "Park Avenue". Robbie suggested we park one vehicle at our starting point and another at the ending point. Since the trail was about a mile, we thought it was a good idea. We took our time and Al and I both took lots of pictures. Not sure it reminded me of the real Park Avenue, but it sure was beautiful.

After our hike and tour of the park we all rode into town and stopped at a nearby RV Park where another couple from the Montana Group, Dennis and Jackie were staying. We all decided to all go into town and stop at a local pub where they were known for their great chicken wings. We all had a great time. All six of us were at the Quartzite Rally in January, where Robbie and Alice were the Wagon Masters, so it really is amazing how many people you meet in one place and run into again in another.

A few days after we arrived at the park, another couple, Laurie and John who we had met while in Lake Mead, arrived at the park. We all got together that night at Robbie and Alice's for a campfire. We were happy that we had a chance to spend some more time with them before we left, especially since they only live about a half hour from our home. Whenever we run into people who have NY license plate, we almost always stop and ask them where they are from unless they beat us to it. They had stopped by our campsite at Lake Mead. Not only did we see them there, we also got together with them in Zion. It seems we are visiting the same National Parks before heading home. Not really a surprise though, because the weather was really getting better at all of these places, so now was the time to go. We met up with them for dinner one night while at Zion. Also, we went for lunch together at a great Mexican Restaurant in Moab one day while in Arches and did a little more touring of the area with them as well.
It was about 18 miles through the park and some of the most spectacular scenery we have ever seen. Our Montana Club friends, Robbie and Alice work at this park during March and April so we were visiting them and seeing this beautiful National treasure at the same time. Like usual, we took soooo many pictures, and there is just too much to put into one blog, so I will do another blog in a few days with more even better pictures. The following pictures are simply ones I took from the truck on our way to our campsite. This drive is called "Robbie and Alice's driveway." Actually, that's what Robbie calls it because it is the most beautiful drive and could you just imagine a driveway like this to come home to everyday? That is exactly what it is like for them for two months of the year, every year. I promise, you will be even more amazed at the photos we took in the days following our arrival.
Unfortunately, I had very slow Internet where we were, so I was unable to do so. Bryce Canyon National Park is located about 89 miles from Zion, so we thought we would just do a day trip to check it out. All of these National Parks are so beautiful, that it would be a shame to be so close and not go there. We knew it was at a very high altitude, and it wouldn't be too practical to take the RV there, especially since there may be snow. So, we decided to just go for the day. After all, 89 miles is not really that far. The only problem, 89 miles driving in mountains, takes a little longer. Also, once you get to the park, it is a lot of driving through the park, and getting in and out of our truck to see everything. It ended up being a very long day, but well worth the trip. We found the overlooks in Bryce to be breathtakingly beautiful to say the least. I am still in awe over the wonder of it all. It was very cold there, considering it was hot at Zion. The altitude was over 9800 ft. in some areas and there was as much as 3 feet of snow. It was kinda nice to visit snow for a day and then leave it behind. I hope you enjoy these pictures.

These rocks are so vibrant in color, difficult to really capture.

Who does this guy look like?

Are these buildings? I am trying to go in order of the places we have visited. Since we left Zion and Bryce, we went to Arches National Park and camped in the campground there. I can't wait to show the pictures of this georgeous place. It was amazing! Canyonlands National Park was only 30+ miles from there so we also visited it as well as a state park called Dead Horse Point State Park. I will be putting up more amazing photos of these wonderful national parks in the very near future. So please check back.

Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04791979881054384630noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157621102351439631.post-43951103910627007912011-04-02T22:33:00.012-04:002011-04-02T23:57:01.568-04:00More of Zion and the Tunnel On our second day in the park, we took a couple of walks on paths to get some exercise and really take it all in. Throughout the park there are several pull-offs where you can stop and get a closer look. On the first day we missed a couple because there were no places to park. So, luckily we were able to stop at those on the second day. After April 1, there are buses that take you through the park. You aren't allowed to drive through that area yourself. Pretty stream on the way to "Weeping Rock"

Lots of people were enjoying the path.

When we got to the top, I took this picture of the waterfall from the overhang. We were on our way to another National Park just for the day, Bryce Canyon National Park. We found out the best way to go, involved going through a tunnel, and the tunnel is located in Zion. The tunnel was built in 1928 and has height and width restrictions. Since we have dual wheels on our truck, we were too wide to just drive through it, and that meant that we had to pay $15 and, they would need to stop traffic and let us go through the middle. It is 2 lanes but, it would be too tight for both vehicles. On our way to the tunnel, we got to see even more beautiful scenery including the picture above and those below.

Just more of Zion..........Isn't it beautiful!

In this picture above, we are approaching the tunnel on our way back home.

Going through the tunnel, there are windows that you can see out.
